It is a specialty in the field of medicine which is relatively new compare to the development of other specialties. It is the specialty that involves in managing cases which need early and urgent care due to the nature of the illness and this can range from mild to very severe conditions. The life and limb saving concept is the foundation of the specialty and the cases managed in this field may range from severe vague illnesses to death cases. A variety of clinical conditions are seen in the Emergency Department(ED) such as cardiovascular (heart) related illnesses, trauma,surgical, obstetrics & gynaecology, psychiatry, diabeticcomplications and even cardiac arrest. The specialty was pioneered by the School of Medical Sciences, USM Kubang Kerian Kelantan in 1998 as a Master degree in Medicine (Emergency Medicine) and the first batch of specialists (6 doctors) in the field (Emergency Physicians) graduated in 2002.
